You have only ONE mind but it possesses 2 distinctive characteristics. It
can be looked on as the objective and subjective mind, the waking and the
sleeping mind, the surface self and the deep self, the voluntary mind and the
involuntary mind etc. The most common terms used to describe these 2
characteristics are the “conscious” and the “subconscious” mind.
The conscious mind is the part of your mind that is responsible for logic and
reasoning.
It makes all your decisions, thinks, plans, reasons and calculates.
It’s chief function is to protect the subconscious mind, it’s like the watchman
at the gate.
It’s responsible for your thinking, waking, voluntary movements. When you
add two and two, it’s your conscious mind that comes up with the answer.
When you move your arm or leg, nod your head, brush your teeth, talk,
smile etc, it’s your conscious mind—you are consciously performing these
tasks.
Your conscious mind is sequential, logical, linear, verbal,
only aware of the present. It tries to understand.
In other words, whenever you are aware of what you are doing, it’s done by
the conscious mind.
The subconscious mind on the otherhand is everything that the conscious
mind isn’t. Over 90% of our mind is run by the subconscious mind and it
runs 24 hours a day.
It is responsible for all involuntary actions like emotions, heartbeat,
breathing etc. It runs your circulatory system, digestive system etc. Think of
it when you go to sleep at night what keeps your heart beating, what keeps
you breathing? Your’e not consciously doing it. It’s your subconscious
mind. It doesn’t think or reason on it’s own.
It’s a storage room for your beliefs and memories. It operates like a
computer, storing all data permanently and doing things exactly as it is
programmed to do.
Your subconscious mind contains all your memories, habits, beliefs,
personality.
One or the best ways to understand how the subconscious mind works is to
remember when you were learning to drive. At the beginning you had to
concentrate on all the different moves, starting the car, changing the gears
etc – using your conscious mind. As time went on the driving process came
to you automatically without having to consciously think. Now you were
able to talk to your passengers while driving. This is because the process of
driving had been transferred to the subconscious mind, leaving the conscious
mind free to concentrate on other things.
Your subconscious mind is creative, impressionable, non selective, it’s
amenable to suggestion and will accept any suggestion however false. It
cannot argue controversially.
It doesn’t try proving whether your thoughts are good or bad, true or false
but the very important factor is that it responds according to your thoughts
and suggestions.
It’s like the soil, it accepts any kind of seed, in this case your thoughts,
whether they are good or bad.
SIMPLE EXERCISE
There is a simple exercise that you can do in order to make the
difference between the conscious and unconscious mind clear. I
want you now to change your breathing rate to either faster or
slower, what you are doing now is using your conscious mind to
breath. Now stop controlling your breath and let it flow naturally.
When you forget about this exercise, you will notice how your
subconscious mind returns your breathing rate back to normal,
contrary to when you had your conscious mind control the process.
You must make sure to give your subconscious mind only positive,
inspirational suggestions, healing thoughts etc. Remember your
subconscious mind cannot take a joke. It literally takes you at your
word. If you give it wrong suggestions, it will accept them as true
and will proceed to bring them to pass as conditions, experiences
and events.
All things that have happened to you during your life are based on
thoughts impressed on your subconscious mind through belief.
A knowledge of the interaction between your conscious and subconscious
mind will enable you to transform your whole life. In order to change
external conditions, you must change the cause, which is your thinking.
Begin thinking thoughts of harmony, positivity, wonderful health etc etc.
IDEA
Think of your mind as a garden. See yourself as the gardener. You are
planting seeds (your thoughts) in the garden (your subconscious mind)
Sow thoughts of positive health, etc etc.
Stop saying things like “the weather is terrible” I hate getting up in the
morning” “the recession is awful” …..the list goes on.
Wonderful saying by Dr Wayne Dyer “Change your thoughts, Change your
life”
Two wonderful books I would suggest people read are
You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay and
The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy.
